The way a woman feels about the look and sensation in her vagina and pubic areas has a major impact on her self-esteem, her sexual desire, and her intimate relationship. Other than seeking labiaplasty for strictly aesthetic reasons, some patients also seek plastic surgery for functional impairment such as pain and discomfort.

Hypertrophy of the labia minora can lead to painful sexual intercourse, interference with sports, chronic urinary tract infections and difficulties with cleanliness.

Genital plastic surgery is divided in to cosmetic and functional genital surgery. Cosmetic genital surgery is usually required in females. Labiaplasty, vaginal tightening and hymenoplasty or reconstruction of hymen are main amongst them. It is also called genital rejuvenation surgery.

Functional genital surgery is commonly done for birth defects in male penis. Hypospadias is commonest genital surgery done for functional purpose in male penis. Obviously circumcision is the commonest surgery done on male penis.
